Skilled workers needed to meet $92b boost to economy.
The federal government is planning a series of training, immigration and infrastructure reforms to address increasing skills shortages as the resource boom adds an expected $92 billion to the Australian economy over the next five years.
Meeting the needs of major Australian mining projects is the focus of a new discussion paper commissioned by the federal government. It aims to gather information about the specific skill needs of resources companies and find ways of meeting them over the next five years and beyond.
The National Resources Sector Employment Taskforce released its Resourcing the Future paper on Monday and it warns of major labour shortages in the near future.
To ensure industry demands can be met quickly, options to boost the labour supply include new models of vocational training and education as well as streamlining of both temporary and permanent skilled migration.
Parliamentary Secretary for Western and Northern Australia Gary Gray is chairing the taskforce and said about 80 major new projects were scheduled to start by 2015.
‘These projects will lead to an increase of around $92 billion in real gross domestic product and create direct and indirect jobs across Australia,’ he said.
These 80 major new projects represent a significant opportunity for job seekers with the necessary skills, however the challenge will be finding enough workers in light of already low unemployment (5.3% January 2010 according to the ABS).
